The Last Days of the Dinosaurs, Written in Argentine Stone

The age of dinosaurs ended in fire. About 66 million years ago an asteroid slammed into ancient Central America and triggered Earth’s fifth mass extinction, erasing roughly three-quarters of all known species. We tell that story again and again — but almost always from one corner of the planet. Now a windswept patch of Patagonian desert is quietly offering something we’ve rarely had: the last days of the dinosaurs, seen from the other end of the world.

What We Were Told

Nearly everything we “know” about the end of the dinosaurs comes from the north — from the badlands of the American West, the home turf of T. rex and Triceratops, where generations of well-funded expeditions have combed the rock. From that northern vantage, a tidy narrative formed: some studies suggested dinosaur diversity was already declining before the impact, perhaps leaving the animals more fragile when catastrophe came. And it was often quietly assumed that the Southern Hemisphere simply mirrored the north — the same story, just playing out on a different continent.

What Was Found

The problem is that the far south has stayed mostly dark. Rocks of exactly the right age are harder to find there, and, as researchers openly admit, there have been fewer scientists and far less funding to look. That’s what makes the Cañadón Tomás Quarry in Argentine Patagonia so valuable. Paleontologist Matthew Lamanna of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, who described the site at a 2023 Geological Society of America conference, calls its potential “exceptional.”

The quarry doesn’t preserve a single animal — it preserves an entire ecosystem from around 66 million years ago, right at the close of the Cretaceous. Researchers have pulled out bones from multiple hadrosaurs — duckbilled, plant-eating dinosaurs — of different ages, hinting they may have lived and died together as a herd. Alongside them: the tooth of a large meat-eating abelisaurid (a cousin of the horned predator Carnotaurus), a claw from a smaller theropod called a noasaurid, the vertebra of a snake, and — smallest and most surprising of all — the jaw of a tiny mammal. Back then this shrub desert was warm and wet, threaded by a meandering stream winding toward the sea, its floodplains cloaked in ferns and palms — the kind of freshwater setting that buries and keeps the dead.

The Detail That Changes Everything

The giants aren’t what changed the game. It was the little jaw. Lamanna admits he wasn’t especially excited at first — until a couple of hours of sifting for small fossils turned up an upper jaw with five teeth. “As soon as the little mammal jaw turned up… my tune changed completely,” he said. It belonged to a regitheriid, a small plant-eating mammal roughly the size of a chipmunk, with intricate ridged teeth for grinding vegetation. Crucially, no fossil mammal jaw had ever been found in the entire geologic basin before. Small skeletons rot and scatter far more easily than massive dinosaur bones, so finds like this are rare — and they often tell us more about an ecosystem than the big, wide-ranging dinosaurs do.

The Central Mystery

Here is the question the site is built to test: did the Southern Hemisphere really mirror the north in the dinosaurs’ final act — or not? If diversity was quietly collapsing up north before the impact, was the same true down south, or was the south a different world with a different fate? And when the asteroid fell, what happened to the survivors so far from the blast? Right now, honestly, no one knows. The end-Cretaceous story of the southern continents is still mostly a blank page, and Cañadón Tomás is one of the first places that might begin to fill it in.

Competing Theories

One long-standing assumption holds that the pre-impact patterns seen in North America played out globally — that the south was simply a southern copy of the north. Cañadón Tomás exists to challenge that with actual evidence rather than inference. A second, intriguing idea comes from University of Chile paleontologist Alexander Vargas, who was not part of the work: perhaps distance from the impact site favored survival in the far south. That could help explain why groups like egg-laying monotreme mammals and the ancestors of modern marsupials persist in southern lands today yet are almost entirely absent up north. It’s a compelling possibility — but still a hypothesis. It’s worth stressing that the site was announced at a conference and is still being excavated and analyzed; these are early findings, and the team plans to keep digging.

Why It Still Haunts Us

There’s something quietly staggering about a place like this. Not one spectacular skeleton, but a whole living community — grazing herds, prowling predators, a snake in the grass, a small mammal no bigger than a chipmunk — all caught together in the last chapter before the sky fell. It reminds us that the “end of the dinosaurs” was not an abstraction or a single famous scene in Montana; it was countless ordinary worlds like this one, on every continent, each with its own residents going about their lives, unaware. And it reminds us how lopsided our knowledge really is — how much of Earth’s story we’ve only half-read, because we mostly looked in one place. As Lamanna put it, after barely scratching the surface and already finding a snake, several dinosaurs, and a mammal: who knows what else might be there?
