In 2007, whalers off the coast of Alaska began butchering a bowhead whale they had just taken — and found something that stopped them cold. Buried deep in the blubber near the animal’s neck was a fragment of metal that didn’t belong to the modern world. It was the tip of an exploding harpoon, a weapon designed and manufactured in the 1880s.
The whale swimming in 2007 had already survived a hunt that happened more than a century earlier. It had been carrying that scar — and that iron — through the Arctic for generations of human history.
A Weapon Older Than Most Nations’ Grandparents
Researchers traced the projectile fragment to a type of bomb-lance that was patented around 1879 and used commercially for only a short window in the late 19th century. That narrow manufacturing period gave scientists a rare, almost accidental timestamp: the whale had to have been struck while that weapon was in use — meaning it was already a free-swimming adult well over 100 years before it was finally caught.
It was not the only case. Over the years, a handful of bowheads have turned up carrying antique stone and ivory harpoon points and old metal fragments, quietly hinting that these animals were far older than anyone had assumed.
How Do You Read a Whale’s Age?
Most large whales are notoriously hard to age. But bowheads gave scientists an unusual key. By analyzing changes in proteins in the lens of the whale’s eye — a method called aspartic acid racemization — researchers estimated that some individuals were 130, 160, even over 200 years old.
These are estimates, not birth certificates, and the method carries a margin of error. But combined with the antique harpoons, the picture became hard to ignore: the bowhead whale is very likely the longest-lived mammal on Earth, outlasting humans, dynasties, and entire empires.
Built to Last in a Frozen World
Why can a bowhead live so long when most mammals are gone within decades? Much of the answer lies in the brutal world it calls home. The Arctic is cold, dark, and slow. Bowheads live life at a low, steady pace, insulated by blubber up to half a meter thick — the thickest of any animal.
In recent years, geneticists studying the bowhead genome have found something even more striking: the whale appears to carry unusually effective versions of genes involved in DNA repair and resisting cancer. For an animal that huge, with so many cells dividing over so many years, the statistical risk of cancer should be enormous. Yet bowheads rarely seem to develop it — a paradox that has scientists studying them not just for conservation, but for clues about human aging and disease.
A Scar That Became a Story
There is something quietly humbling about that harpoon. It was meant to be an ending. Instead, it became a marker — proof of a life that simply refused to stop. The hunters who threw it have been gone for over a hundred years. Their tools have rusted in museums. And the animal they wounded kept swimming through the same cold sea, year after year, decade after decade.
Hunted nearly to extinction in the commercial whaling era, bowheads are now protected, and their numbers in some populations are slowly recovering — a second chance for a creature that already knows how to endure.
