What We Were Told
When Cheddar Man was first discovered in 1903, nobody could have known how much information would eventually be extracted from his remains.
For decades, the skeleton was simply one of Britain’s oldest surviving human remains.
Radiocarbon dating later placed his death at around 10,000 years ago, making him the oldest nearly complete skeleton of Homo sapiens discovered in Britain.

Then ancient DNA changed the story.
What Was Found
Genomic analysis allowed researchers to reconstruct aspects of Cheddar Man’s appearance that bones alone could never reveal.
His genetic markers indicate highly pigmented skin, dark hair, and light-colored eyes, most likely blue or blue-green.
His face challenged the assumption that ancient Britons necessarily looked like modern northern Europeans.
The finding was not isolated. Other Mesolithic Europeans had also been found to carry genetic variants associated with darker pigmentation and lighter eyes.

The Detail That Changes Everything
Cheddar Man lived around 10,000 years ago.
At that time, Britain was not yet the familiar island of today. After the last Ice Age, sea levels were lower, and Britain was still connected to continental Europe. Hunter-gatherers moved through this changing landscape.
His genome belongs to the population now known as Western European Mesolithic hunter-gatherers.
And that population would not remain dominant forever.

The Central Mystery
If Cheddar Man looked so different from many people living in Britain today, what happened to the population he belonged to?
The answer lies not in one isolated skeleton, but in thousands of years of migration and population change.
Ancient DNA indicates that later farming populations entered Britain and that subsequent migrations dramatically reshaped the island’s gene pool. By around 4,400 years ago, another major population movement associated with the Beaker phenomenon was underway.

Competing Theories
One early interpretation imagined ancient Britons as ancestors of the modern population in a relatively straightforward line.
Another possibility is that later migrations substantially changed Britain’s population while preserving some ancestry from earlier hunter-gatherers.
Modern genomic evidence strongly supports the second picture: Britain’s population history involved multiple migrations, mixture and substantial population turnover, rather than a simple uninterrupted lineage from Cheddar Man to modern Britons.
It is also important to correct a popular misconception: Cheddar Man’s DNA does not identify him as the direct ancestor of a particular modern British person. The Natural History Museum notes that modern British people may share ancestry with the broader Mesolithic population he belonged to, but this cannot be attributed specifically to Cheddar Man himself.

Why It Still Haunts Us
For thousands of years, Cheddar Man lay inside a Somerset cave with no way to tell us who he was.
Today, a few fragments of ancient DNA have transformed him from a silent skeleton into a glimpse of a Britain that looked very different from the country we know.
And perhaps the strangest part is this:
How many other faces from Britain’s forgotten past are still waiting beneath the ground?
